Act4.2.94-103
Throughout class we have been debating the innocence of Beatrice's naivety when making the deal with De Flores. It almost seemed hard to believe that a woman as smart as Beatrice, could not understand what she was offering and what De Flores was excpecting when discussing the deal. Originally I believed that Beatrice was just careless and stupid in not realizing that she was offering her body to De Flores, until I read this passage. I still am skeptical and unsure about the "real" and "genuine" Beatrice, however it does seem that she has always known the true intentions of De Flores. In the passage, Jasperino warns Alsemero about his wife. Jasperino overheard Beatrice and De Flores in the middle of sex. he "heard" his bride's voice in the room next to him and found De Flores even louder. By hearing De Flores "even louder" i imagine that Beatrice's voice was "loud". If someone felt that they were forced into sex by blackmail I don't imagine that they could possibly get any pleasure out of the act... and how often are they having sex? Is it necessary for her to have it right after her marriage with another man or is it because she wants to have it? It seems to me that it's almost as if she wants him to want her and she wants to have an excuse to sleep with him. What are her real intentions? Who is the real Beatrice?
