Lorenzo has been characterized as the "evil" character who continues to cause more trouble as he covers up his murder of Horatio. Yet, I find it very interesting that Pedringano is depicted as a victim to Lorenzo's plots
Hangman (3.7 line 24) "...we have done him wrong."
Should Lorenzo take the blame for Pedringano's downfall? If Pedringano was only obeying orders from his superiors, is his execution unjust? I do not believe that Lorenzo, although guilty in his own right, can not take the blame for Pedringano's actions. This also calls into question if Pedringano- or servants in general- have free-will. Pedringano was the one who betrayed Bel-Imperia and led Balthazar and Lorenzo to Horatio and Bel-Imperia's secret meeting. He was the one who assisted the murder of Horatio and murdered Serberine. Although he at first resisted in giving out information, he quickly changed his mind after receiving a threat. He seems to take to his tasks without resistance or reluctance and his conscious doesn't ever make him pause for consideration on his actions. He follows Lorenzo without hesitation which ironically causes him to fall to his own death. Pedringano is hardly a victim; he brought his execution on by himself.
